Page xiii →Carolina Currents would not be possible without the generous support of Francis Marion University (FMU). Dr. Luther F. Carter, president of FMU, and Dr. Alissa Warters, university provost, have provided resources, guidance, and encouragement.
Editorial board members have urged colleagues to contribute to Carolina Currents and have graciously served as reviewers for the many essays we received. Several of our FMU colleagues have also served as reviewers: Caleb Doan, Dustin M. Meyer, J. Mark Blackwell, and John Rowan. I also thank J. Porter Lillis of the University of North Carolina, Pembroke.
Two student workers have assisted with production. Maggie Odom and Gracen Tyce have worked tirelessly on the bibliographies and notes. Their work has been tremendously helpful.
Our colleague Erica Johnson deserves special thanks. Erica has contributed to each volume of Carolina Currents. Two of her essays have been coauthored with students. She has also prepared book reviews, encouraged colleagues to contribute, and reviewed a number of submissions. Even when we’ve imposed unreasonable deadlines, Erica has always provided outstanding guidance and recommendations. Her commitment and generosity have made Carolina Currents better.
Christine Johnson has helped proofread the finished version.
The good people at the University of South Carolina Press have been, as always, wonderful partners. I acknowledge Michael McGandy, Aurora Bell, and Kerri L. Tolan, all of whom have been exceptionally helpful and patient. The University of South Carolina Libraries have provided vital funding to support the open access version of the volume.
